2012 Kentucky Derby Prop Betting Doesn’t Expect Wire-To-Wire Winner

There are a handful of colts that all have realistic shots at winning today’s Kentucky Derby, so much so that oddsmakers have had a hard time decifering a front runner. They settled on Bodemeister’s speed and good position in making him the favorite, but he’ll have to wade through a brutal field to capture the championship.

And the stiff competition won’t just come from other favorites like Union Rags and Gemologist. Colts like Trinniberg could shape the race, too. He was victorious his last two races with jockey Willie Martinez on-board, winning by a combined nine lengths at Swale at Gulfstream Park and Bay Shore at Aqueduct. His problem has been endurance, and hasn’t fared well in long tracks like Churchhill Downs.

Still, Trinniberg has led at some point in all seven of his career races. And even though sportsbooks like Bovada won’t give him much a shot at actually crossing the finish line first, there is still a good chance he will be out front early. That could force speedsters like Bodemeister to turn on the gas too soon and chase.

“All we can do is speculate, but until the gates open, you don’t know what any of the horses are going to do,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “There’s like four or five horses (that can win). It’s going to be competitive.”

That’s why Bovada’s Kentucky Derby Prop Betting is giving -800 odds that the winning horse won’t go wire-to-wire. If one does, though, it will result in a nice +500 payday.

With horses like Hansen (10/1) and Gemologist (6/1) at the 14th and 15th position, there will likely be a lot of lead changes. Hansen’s odds to win got a huge boost with the position, but Gemologist looks to be in even better shape. He’s unbeaten in five starts, including a nice win at Wood Memorial Stakes three weeks ago. In that race, Alpha actually took the lead late, but Gemologist was able to regain speed and inch him out.

Look out for Creative Cause, too, who actually beat Bodemeister in the San Felipe Stakes, and has never been out of the money in eight career starts.
