2012 Belmont Stakes Odds And Preview

I’ll Have Another is the front runner for Belmont this weekend, and will be regardless of his competition. None-the-less, he’ll have another (pun intended) horse to beat now that My Adonis has entered the field, bringing the tally to 12 colts overall. Ramon Dominguez is expected to be the jockey for Saturday’s race along the 1 ½-mile track.

In his most recent start, at Canonero II Stakes at Pimilco, My Adonis finished third on the same day I’ll Have Another won at Preakness, the second leg of his Triple Crown quest.

I’ll Have Another could become the first horse in 34 years to win the Crown if he wins Saturday. Bovada’s 2012 Belmont Futures are labeling him as the early favorite to win the race. Four horses this decade have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown, only to lose in New York. Big Brown was the most recent victim in 2008.

He’s had about as stressful a two weeks as he could have after trainer Doug O’ Neil was sentenced on doping charges. Racing officials have cracked down on the treatments horses are allowed to receive this week, forcing them into a new barn with 24-hour surveillance and visits by appointment. Security officials will be checking everyone’s bags as they enter the stables and monitoring their treatments.

Odds aren’t currently posted for My Adonis yet until he “officially” enters the race during the position draw. Owners George and Lori Hall had the winning horse last year when 24-1 longshot Ruler On Ice beat the field. They can become the first owners since 1973 to win back-to-back races at Belmont.

But the main competition will likely come from Union Rags or Paynter, which won an undercard race at Pimlico. Union Rags had the second-best odds to win the Kentucky Derby, and sat out at Preakness.
